Mobile phones 😫 my husband starts twitching if his isn’t strapped to him first thing he looks at in the morning and last thing at night drives me insane 🤪. Me on the other hand forgets to take it with me quite often I don’t know how use most of the things on it but I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. I remember queuing for the public phone box with my change to make a call to friends my daughters look horrified at the very thought of it. ☎️📞

I remember I used to reverse the charges if I phoned my Mum from a phone box! My husband is the same with his phone, in fact I can see him from where I am sitting, gazing into the screen. The thing that annoys me most is when I'm busy he will keep asking me to look at videos of absolute rubbish that he thinks are funny. Oh well, horses for courses, Trish! Have a lovely day.

I do wonder what would happen if we took their phones away for a week!

Made me chuckle. I don't think so much about the adults overusing "devices," unless they have small children and are ignoring them in favor of being glued to the phone. That is unforgivable, in my humble opinion. But they do have free will and can change if they are determined to. However, kids and teens are another matter. Here in California, lots of kids don't even play outside anymore, especially boys. They are inside playing video games every waking hour it seems to me. Your story was delightful, and your parents were trusting! You were brave!

Hi Sally, it seems children here are using phones and taking them to school at a ridiculously young age now, even nursery school children aged 3 and 4 have them, it's absolutely crazy. A lot of parents are complaining about it and trying to get them banned from schools but I don't understand why those same adults just don't stop buying them for their children. As to my parents, it really is a mystery to me, still, that they agreed to let me go and take the only car they had. I think they were the brave ones, I just thought it was all great fun!

Excellent post. I am with you all the way. I am 66 and have also been thinking a lot lately about how we had more freedom as kids in pre-computer days. If you have a chance, do check out my latest post. It is all about the freedom to roam and find adventure in the 1960s and '70s.

Thank you so much Perry. I shall certainly have a read of your post, we definitely had more freedom. Someone told me the other day she put a tracker on her son's mobile when he went to Uni so she could see where he was all the time. How awful, for both of them!

I’ve also been thinking about how much freedom we had growing up in the 60s and 70s. My mother used shoo us out of the house if she thought we needed to find something to do or if she was tired of us being underfoot. When I was a teenager, the only rule was “don’t be late” with no time attached.

My husband and I did a 4500 mile road trip through the western US and into Canada last year using our GPS and back up paper maps. As we traveled I thought of all the road trips we took when I was a kid. No internet for hotel reservations, no GPS to get you around a new city- I felt quite in awe of my parents for their trip planning!

I remember car trips abroad with my parents , stopping overnight wherever we found somewhere, that was half the fun. Times really have changed so much, Lorraine. I must sound like a dinosaur but I always buy a map if we are going someone different, I still enjoy looking at a map, and the sound of a GPS drives me mad sometimes. We were always outside playing with the other children playing on the street, as long as we came home for tea we were left to our own devices. Happy days.

I think that having constant access to everything is not a good thing. I took off the instagram and Facebook apps from my phone and can honestly say I haven't missed them. I had the most fabulous first holiday abroad with friends when I was 18. We didn't phone home. We sent a postcard. We were so free and alive.

Yay, the postcard! What a magical thing that was, Lily. I remember it was the first thing we used to do on family holidays, go and find some postcards to send to home to friends and family. I used to squeeze so much in that little space. Well done for deleting Facebook and Instagram, that's a very big step. I still enjoy Instagram but really do not have the time to engage as much as I used to and I don't look at FB very much at all. I'm so pleased to have found Substack where there are no adverts, I really hope it stays this way. x

I loved your story of your trip to France. What a wonderful adventure and you look beautiful in your fabulous swimsuit.

I do like my phone and use it for Substack, Google and occasionally maps (although I prefer a paper map any day) etc but it never comes in the bedroom at night and I often forget to take it out with me!

Thank you Lindsay for that wonderful story of your adventure in France and your views on the mobile phone. I agree with you that we had more privacy in our teens pre the mobile phone.

That overuse comes with a price for me: a shortened attention span and worse posture! I want to break up with my phone, too. I notice when I'm gardening, I don't give a hoot where that thing is. I love you in that bathing suit! So sassy.
